FAQ

Ever since the 2.5 version of the character sheet was created I have been receiving tons of email asking "How do I add xxx information?", "Will the next version be able to do xxx?", "Can I have an unlocked version of the sheet so I can edit it myself?", "Will you do a custom sheet for my group we use 40 different stats that aren't on the sheet?". I know it is nice to have a custom sheet for each kind of character and gaming group but lets face it it is allot of work and what would you rather have me do answering 25 to 50 emails a day or improving on the sheets. Here are the answers to some of the top questions.

Can I have a non password protected copy of the sheet?
No. Allot of the scripts I have used to create the sheet are very simple and there really isn't any reason to look at them. I know there are still some bugs in the sheet that some of you want to correct send, me the bugs and I will fix them. If you are working on you own sheet and wanting to use mine as a guide trust me you would be better off writing your own scripts. I am not the greatest javascript programmer so my code is somewhat sloppy and I don't normally comment it. If you do have a specific question about a piece of code I can try and help you but I can't make any promises.

  • Will you translate the sheet into another language for me?
No. I only know 2 languages, English (American) and Bad English. So that makes translating it to other languages tough. Also it cannot easily be done inside of Acrobat. Acrobat doesn't fully recognize the small capital letters used on the sheet as they are not part of the font definition. The original document design was done in Visio Technical 5 then exported as a PDF for modification. So if anything needs to be changed on the sheet that doesn't involve a form field I have to go back to the original and make changes.

  • When will you be adding support for the newest book or supplement?
Supplements to the D&D game are inevitable. As new ones come out and I get them I will add their features to the sheet as applicable. Anything that comes out in a hard bound book will be added unless it is for a specific campaign world. Campaign specific books will depend on my gaming group. If we decide to use the book in our game it will be added to the sheet.

  • When is the next update comming out?
Good question, unfortunately I don't have a good answer. Bug fixes I will try to get out within a week of finding them depending on the severity (I am after all the only programmer on the project). Support for new books will come out at the earliest 2 weeks after the book has been released personal finances permitting. Remember I don't get paid to do this so I have to do other tings to afford the books.

  • How do I create a multi-classed character?
Multi-classing is really straight forward. The class bar at the top of the character sheet has 4 spaces and 4 boxes. The first space and box are filled in automatically. In the other spaces and boxes type in the character class and level the sheet will automatically fill in the total level for the character. This time around I eliminated the pull-downs for classes beyond first to support prestige classes better.

  • What are the boxes next to the character class used for?
    See above.

  • Will you make a custom sheet for my group?
For free? No. For pay? Not likely. Because you are a nice guy? Wrong. It takes quite a bit of time design and test a new sheet, time I just don't have right now. I can do simple things like change the Dungeon and Dragons logo at the top of the sheet to your groups logo or add custom character images but that is really it until I get some other things taken care of.

  • Why are my skill rolls off?
If you haven't noticed yet the numbers in some skill rolls don't add up correctly, the swim check for example. For this version of the sheet I am not showing racial, load and armor check modifiers in the skill section. I received a few request from people to use a larger font for the skill section to make it easier to read so I had to remove the second MISC column. It also killed al questions about why you couldn't change some of the values in the MISC column.

  • My max dex bonus to AC keeps changing?
This version tracks the max dex bonus allot closer that the previous and uses its value when finding AC. So if you are wearing a restrictive set of armor it adjust you dex bonus accordingly. This also keeps the player more honest by not letting a character get a bonus they can't use (no more elf fighters 20 DEX and heavy armor getting the full +5 dex bonus to AC). The same holds true for load limits. If the character is encumbered it is going to show in the max dex.

  • I can't get the email part to work. Whats wrong with it?
Email only works if you have a MAPI compliant email program and the OS you run the form on supports Acrobat Reader's email functions. Once you have a compatable email client the server will mail you back a .FDF file. This file is an extract of the data you entered into the character sheet. The file contains a line that tells Acrobat Reader where to find the source file. This line will point to the origional location of the file when you started entering information. If the location specified in the FDF file does not match exactly the file will not open. See
question 19 for information on how to make this change.

  • Can I edit the sheet with Adobe Acrobat v3?
Version 3 of Acrobat doesn't support Javascript as well as version 4 so some of the functions will not work.

  • Where are the spaces for special class powers? (clerical turning, ranger favored enemies, rogue backstab)
I have just added a new page to cover this verry question. It can be found on page 10 of the sheet

  • The DM's page doesn't show my characters skills or weapons.
The reason it doesn't put weapons and skills on the next page is the next page isn't part of the DM's sheet. The page after the DM's page is an overflow page for new character skills and weapons. I chose to put the page after the DM's sheet to make it easier for inkjet users to print the character sheet. This way you can print a basic character in one step by printing pages 4 - 6 and only printing page 7 as needed.

  • Why doesn't it allow me to select a weapon after I choose the weapon focus feat?
The weapon list is in continual growth and as are the way various campaigns handle weapon skills. Example, some campaigns accept that bastard sword weapon focus/specialization is the same as katana weapon focus/specialization others say it is not and you need to learn each separately. What about pole-arms, each one is designed for a specific purpose and is used differently. Why bother with the hassle.

  • What do I use the hand box in the weapons section for?
When the whole idea of primary, off-hand, ambidextrous and two-weapon fighting was introduced I had though WoTC would use flat hand related penalties so you could easily separate out the different bonuses. Instead I got a pain in the butt chart. So my group and I went through and rewrote the way hands are used in the game. Now we have seperate penalties for which hand is used, wether the character is ambidextrous and if they know two-weapon fighting. This field is part of that change. Use it however you like.

  • Will you be adding the Faerunian gods to the sheet?
No, have you seen the size of the list it is 3 pages long, trying to scroll through that much information can cause blindness.

  • Why are there only 54 slots for equipment? I need more space for XYZ.
If you have to carry more that 54 different things with you on a dungeon crawl you may have problems. The character is designed to list only the important items you are carrying, not items in trunks at your characters castle or in portable holes, on your horse ect.

  • Why is the strength bonus sometimes off when I select off-hand or both for weapons?
WoTC chose to round down numbers instead of the normal round up. For a program to understand this requires additional programming code on all the calculations where fractions can pop up. The code itself is simple but putting it into the form takes time, you have to find all the fractions first. The sheet has over 100 form fields that need to be checked and I haven't had the time to do it.

  • How do I use the FDF files I recieve once I get the email part working?
Open the FDF file using a text editor (notepad, vi, emeditor, edlin). If you don't know what a text editor is stop now and go out and buy the full version Adobe Acrobat and save yourself alot of problems. Once you have the file open scroll down untile you see a line like this one (../pdf/Character-Starter-v4-build001.pdf) change the line to match the exact location of the chararacter sheet. So if the sheet is saved in c:\user\files\charactersheets then you change the line to read (c:/user/files/charactersheets/Character-Starter-v4-build001.pdf). Save the file and close the text editor. Now open the FDF file using Acrobat Reader and it should open the charactersheet with all the character information in the right places.
